Issued alongside the N172 Old Judge Cigarettes series from 1888 to 1889, these cabinets were redeemable via coupons packaged in Old Judge and Dog’s Head cigarette boxes such as the one pictured here.

When a cabinet was received, it would feature an advertisement along the bottom for either Old Judge cigarettes or Dogs Head cigarettes. It is believed advertisements from Dogs Head cigarettes were used to try and promote the product as it was one of Goodwin & Co.’s most unpopular brands of cigarettes. With variations, the set contains over 1000 cabinets, many just enlarged versions of the small N172s.

Old Judge Cigarette boxes are fairly scarce although not impossible to find. However, they often command prices in excess of what their “true” value should be since Old Judge slide and shell boxes are possibly the most desired of all baseball related cigarette collectors. On the other hand, Dogs Head cigarette boxes are extremely rare and prove difficult to find.

Approximate value of an empty Old Judge Cigarettes box dating between 1888 and 1889 would be $450.00.
Approximate value of an empty Dog's Head Cigarettes box dating between 1888 and 1889 would be $550.00.
